En Girona, el viernes santo se celebra La Procesión del Santo Entierro, de la que se tiene noticia desde mediados del siglo XVIII, en la que toman parte más de 1.200 personas, de diferentes cofradías de la ciudad, y 119 soldados manaies, vestidos de legionarios romanos y armados de lanzas, espadas y escudos que desfilan solemnemente golpeando el suelo con sus lanzas al son de la música.
Este acto, considerado como central en la Semana Santa de Girona, tiene su legendario origen en el momento de la muerte de Jesús, cuando una comisión de legionarios ordenados por Poncio Pilatos, acudieron a comprobar si el mesías había resucitado.
